Course Objectives The objective of this course is to introduce students to the fundamental design knowledge for highway engineering.
Course Description Course Content: Introduction to transportation systems, Basic definitions of highway components, Characteristics of road users and vehicles, Vehicle movements, General characteristics of highway traffic, Highway capacity, Selection of highway geometric standards, Location survey, Horizontal curves and super-elevation, Transition curves, Road profile and vertical curves, Earthworks, Cost equations and Earth distribution.
Course Outcomes By the end of this course, students should be able to evaluate, analyse, draw, and calculate a typical road plan, profile, and its related earthworks. Consequently, students familiar with the general principles presented in the course will find it easier to apply these skills if they choose transportation engineering as their career field.
