Course Objectives
Definition of force and moment vectors and necessary vector algebra
Equilibrium of particle and rigid body (plane and space)
Supports and support reactions
Equilibrium of structures, internal forces (trusses, frames, cables, machines)
Course Description
Statics is a core aeronautical/astronautical engineering course that introduces the analysis of forces and moments acting on particles and rigid bodies in equilibrium, with direct relevance to aircraft and spacecraft structures. The course covers vector mechanics, force systems, free-body diagrams, equilibrium of particles and rigid bodies, and the analysis of trusses, frames, and mechanical components commonly encountered in aerospace structures. Additional topics include friction, internal forces, centroids, centers of gravity, and area and mass moments of inertia, emphasizing their role in load paths, structural efficiency, and stability of aerospace systems. The course aims to build the analytical foundation required for advanced studies in solid mechanics, structural analysis, flight structures, and aerospace design.
Course Outcomes
Vector algebra (scalar and vectorial product, addition and subtraction), definition of force and moment
Equilibrium of particle and rigid body
Center of gravity
Support and support reactions
Equilibrium of structures (beams, Gerber beams, trusses, frames, cables, machines), shear and bending moment diagrams
Distributed loads and hydrostatic forces
