Course Objectives 1.To give an understanding of main subjects of foundation engineering
2.To express the importance of foundation engineering in the scope of civil
engineering by proper examples
3.To express the importance of professional know-how and back ground by several cases
Course Description Introduction to geotechnical engineering. Site investigation and in-situ soil tests. Slope Stabilit. Sheet piles, dimensioning and principles for calculations. Shallow foundations; bearing capacity and settlement of shallow foundations. Deep foundations; designing deep foundations, pile types, pile design, caissons, footings. Bearing capacity of deep foundations. Soil improvement; soil improvement methods, compaction methods.
Course Outcomes Student, who passed the course satisfactorily can:
1. Learn why geotechnical engineering is needed
2. Learn what soil investigation and geotechnical report is and what are content of the report and how to
prepare
3. What is slope failure How to calculate stability of a slope What are the improvement techniques for slope
failure
4. Calculate lateral earth pressures acting on a retaining structure
5. Designing of retaining structure
6. Calculating the bearing capacity of a foundation base soil
7. Designing of shallow foundations
8. Determination of deep foundation type and learning the design criterias of them
9. Improving the soils by proper techniques
10. Compaction of fill deposits by proper techniques
Pre-requisite(s) INS 331, INS 331E (Min DD)
Required Facilities Minimum 70% of attendance to classes, exams, project and HW
