Course Objectives
To introduce the student to statics of particles and rigid bodies, forces and force components, moments, analysis of structures, beams, friction, moments of inertia and the principle of virtual work.
Course Description
Statics of particles, forces in a plane and in space. Statics of rigid bodies. Distributed forces, centroids and centers of gravity. Structures, trusses, frames, machines. Forces in beams and cables. Friction. Moment of inertia. Principle of virtual work.
Course Outcomes
- To be able to compute the components of forces
- To be able to compute the resultant force
- To be able to compute the projection of one vector onto another
- To be able to compute the moments of forces
- To be able to formulate and solve the equations of equilibrium of particles
- To be able to compute support reactions
- To be able to formulate and solve the equations of equilibrium of rigid bodies
- To be able to compute centers of gravity
- To be able to analyze frames
