Course Objectives

1. To develop the skills on design and operation of land treatment systems
2. To develop the skills on selecting the best land treatment system among the alternatives

Course Description

Site investigations. Pretreatment methods. Septic tanks, sand filters, anaerobic filters, infiltration ditches.
Design of infiltration systems. Fundamentals of land treatment. Mechanisms of land treatment. Removal of
pollutants in the soil matrix. Subsurface treatment systems. Slow rate systems. Rapid infiltration systems.
Natural and constructed wetlands. Treatment systems with floating aquatic plants. Environmental and public
health effects of land treatment systems.
