SED 316E - Lean Production Systems

Course Objectives

Course Learning Outcomes: Students who achieve at this course will be able to 1.Distinguish value-added and non-value added activities (wastes) from each other. 2. Apply various techniques of waste elimination in a production system. 3. Sketch a value-stream-map of a system 4. Learn foundations of a Kanban system 5. Comprehend the link between production lead time and inventory costs. 6. Learn foundations of lean logistics practices.

Course Description

Foundations of Lean/Just-in-Time (JIT) Production: Eliminating Muda, Mura, Muri
Industrial Housekeeping (5S), Visual Workplace & Set-up Analysis and Reduction;
Total Productive Maintenance (TPM)--Industry 4.0 & Lean production implementation methodology
Push, Pull (Kanban) and Hybrid Production Control Systems (Polca, Conwip); Kanban Videos; Lean Game
Types of Kanbans and Their Applications, Application Examples
Value Stream Mapping (VSM)- Current State & Future State VSM's
Production Smoothing, Mixed Model Assembly Line Scheduling, YAMAZUMI (Line balancing)
Lean Logistics & Supply Chains: Bullwhip effect, Supplier Milk-run Practices
In-Plant Parts Distribution: Kanban-based Milk-Run, Kitting, Sequencing
