Course Objectives
The main goal of this course is to introduce students to the gender issues in economics, business and management. The course provides an overview of the gender issues in employment, earnings, jobs segregation, representation in decision-making and leadership, management of businesses and organization of work places.
Course Description
The course provides an overview of the gender issues in employment, earnings, jobs segregation, representation in decision-making and leadership, management of businesses and organization of work places. We explore how gender patterns impact businesses and economic outcomes, how they interact with the policy and regulatory environment and the political economy context. Under each topic we look at the empirical trends, alternative theoretical frameworks accounting for the causes and effects of these observed trends and policy debates in light of the latest theoretical and empirical research and state-of-the-art thinking. The course aims to equip management engineering students with an in-depth understanding of: i. the impact of gender issues on businesses and the economy; ii. mechanisms, structures and polices for mainstreaming gender equality into management and economic processes. Consideration of the relation of gender patterns with sustainability of businesses, economic, social and environmental sustainability is a cross-cutting theme throughout the course.
