Course Description The course provides an overview of the gender issues in employment, earnings, jobs segregation, representation in decision-making and leadership, management of businesses and organization of work places. We explore how gender patterns impact businesses and economic outcomes, how they interact with the policy and regulatory environment and the political economy context. Under each topic we look at the empirical trends, alternative theoretical frameworks accounting for the causes and effects of these observed trends and policy debates in light of the latest theoretical and empirical research and state-of-the-art thinking. The course aims to equip management engineering students with an in-depth understanding of: i. the impact of gender issues on businesses and the economy; ii. mechanisms, structures and polices for mainstreaming gender equality into management and economic processes. Consideration of the relation of gender patterns with sustainability of businesses, economic, social and environmental sustainability is a cross-cutting theme throughout the course.
Course Outcomes In addition to the weekly lectures by the instructor, there will also be in-class exercises and discussions where the students are expected to participate actively. The course has a comprehensive reading requirement. Doing the readings on time will allow for your active participation in the class discussions and exercises, and contribute towards your grade evaluation (see below). The university requirement of minimum attendance (70%) will be applied as a condition to take the final exam. The powerpoint presentations and any other course materials used in the lectures will be posted on the course website on http://ninova.itu.edu.tr .
