Course Objectives
The goal of this course is to introduce students to the marine environment and many types of communities associated with it and provide students with a general understanding of marine ecological processes. The course focuses on the human impact on the sea by giving the global ecological issues, problems and solutions.
Course Description
The course topics cover the general information about the fate and effects of major pollutants in marine ecosystems, research and pollution monitoring studies, pollution results from the shipyards and actions to be taken and global environmental problems.
Course Outcomes
Students who pass the course will have the information about the following topics:
I. Introduction to ecology;
II. Ecosystems science and the marine environment;
III. Comparison of terrestial and marine ecosystems;
IV. Classification of marine environment; Functioning of marine ecosystems; Energy flow; the carbon and mineral (nutient) cycling;
V. Food chain in marine systems;
VI. Phytoplankton and primary production;
VII. Consumers in marine environments;
VIII. Ecological environments in marine ecosystems;
IX. Long-term and large-scale change in marine ecosystems; Ecological monitoring and related activities; Human impact on the sea; Global ecological issues, problems and solutions.
