ITB 222E - City and Society
Course Objectives
This course aims to introduce students to selected topics related to contemporary urban society and space and to enable them to learn about these topics through reading and research. The course also aims to encourage students to reflect on their personal experiences in the city in light of specific concepts and to identify the geographical characteristics of the professions they plan to pursue in the future.
Course Description
The course consists of lectures and student assignments. The lectures address important urban issues from different theoretical perspectives and examine case studies from Turkey and around the world in the disciplines of urban sociology, economic geography, and urban political economy. The course is divided into three sections: diversity in urban society, the organization of work, and the production of cities, with student assignments at the end of each section. Students are expected to write an essay about their own urban life experiences and a research paper about the organization of their future professions in light of the theories and concepts covered in the course. The final section concludes with an exam.
