Course Objectives Concept of globalization and debates on globalization; global trends in production, trade and direct investments; organizational structures of transnational corporations and the geography of transnational production networks; functions of nation state in the process of globalization; bargaining relationship between states and transnational corporations; geographical ties of multinational corporations; role of technology in globalization; impact of foreign direct investments; environmental effects of globalization; effects of globalization on income and employment.
Course Description 1. To give an understanding of the extension of global economy and the basic dynamics behind the phenomenon of globalization.
2. To discuss the strategies of transnational corporations and policies of states as the two main actors that shape the process of globalization at the levels of local, regional and global scales.
3. To grasp the effects of the process of globalization on developed and developing countries.
Course Outcomes By successfully completing this unit, students will:
I. I. Show an understanding of the processes of economic globalization at the local, regional and global levels and the interactions among them,
II. Grasp the strategies of transnational corporations as an important actor in the process of globalization and also how those strategies reshape global economic map,
III. Show an understanding of various theories on the relationship between globalization and state and be able to apply these theories to current and historical events,
IV. Discuss state economic policies comparatively in different country cases,
V. Evaluate the underlying dynamics of the bargaining relationship between transnational corporations and states on the basis of case studies.
VI. Understand the role of technological developments in facilitating globalization
VII. Distinguish the effects of economic globalization on different segments of societies both in developed and developing countries.
VIII. Develop their ability to present information clearly and succinctly in both written and oral forms.
