Course Objectives The learning objectives of this course are given below:
1. Microbiological structure and diversity of biological treatment systems,
2. Filamentous microorganisms causing bulking and foaming problems in biological treatment systems,
3. Parameters that cause overgrowth of filamentous microorganisms and control applications in activated sludge treatment systems
Course Description General information about microorganisms, reviews and evaluations, microbial diversity, conventional and specific microbiology of biological wastewater treatment systems, activated sludge microbiology, floc structures and their settlement characteristics, identification of filamentous microorganisms, some laboratory applications, illustrations and biodiversity of filamentous microorganisms, reasons of filamentous microorganisms overgrowth, basic and specific conditions for filamentous overgrowth, causing bulking and foaming problems in activated sludge systems, control studies and solution applications.
Course Outcomes Ph.D. students who successfully pass this course gain the knowledge, skills and competency given below;
I. Developing and intensifying fundamental and special microbiology knowledge in biological wastewater treatment systems (knowledge).
II. The ability to evaluate and use information gathered from scientific studies and applications related with filamentous microorganisms, bulking and foaming problems (skill).
III. The ability to analyze, synthesize and evaluate information and parameters that cause bulking and foaming problems in biological wastewater treatment systems (skill).
IV. Preparing a presentation and report in English related to microbiology of biological treatment systems (Communication and Social Competency).
V. Acquiring the most developed skills about using research methods in laboratory studies related with filamentous microorganisms, other microorganisms and floc structures of biological wastewater treatment systems (skill).
