Course Objectives 1. To familiarize students with the basic concepts and characteristics of fiber reinforced composite materials,
2. Demonstrate a fundamental understanding of the commonly used fabrication techniques and the applications for composite materials,
3. Give an ability to apply the knowledge of mechanics of composite materials on engineering applications and design problems.
Course Description Basic concepts of composite materials, Hooke’s law for different types of materials, Macromechanical analysis of a lamina, Strength failure theories of an angle lamina, Hygrothermal effects, Micromechanical analysis of a lamina, Stress-strain relations and macromechanical analysis of laminates, Analysis and design of laminates, Bending of laminated beams.
Course Outcomes 1. Demonstrate the definition, characteristics and behavior of fiber reinforced composite materials,
2. Demonstrate the commonly used fabrication techniques and the applications for composite materials,
3. Demonstrate the stress-strain relations of composite lamina,
4. Calculate the engineering constants from the constituents properties
5. Have an ability to calculate the components of compliance and the stiffness matrices for an angle lamina,
6. Calculate the lamina stress and strain components due to the mechanical and hygrothermal loading,
7. Calculate the stiffness matrix and in-plane engineering constants of a laminate,
8. Calculate the mid-plane strains and curvatures based on the force and moments resultants,
9. Calculate through-the-thickness stress and strain distributions,
10. Analyze and design laminated structures and properly interpret and discuss the solution outcome.
