Course Objectives
The purpose of this course is to introduce the concepts and fundamentals of optimization, build up the pertinent theory, and solve problems arising in communication systems by making use of this theory.
Course Description
Review of linear algebra and multivariable calculus, unconstrained optimization, iterative gradient and Newton's methods, equality and inequality constraints, convex sets and functions, convex optimization problems, linear programming, quadratic programming, semi-definite programming, geometric programming, Lagrangian duality, multiobjective optimization, case studies in communication systems.
Course Outcomes
M.Sc./Ph.D. students who successfully pass this course gain knowledge, skill and competency in the following subjects;
I) Necessary and sufficient conditions for constrained and unconstrained optimization.
II) Basic methods for solving optimization problems.
III) Formulating and modeling real-life problems as basic optimization problems.
IV) Proficiency in solving optimization problems arising in communication systems.
