Course Objectives
1. Gaining recent and detailed knowledge about the physical and structural characteristics of the Earth’s crust and the uppermost mantle derived from geophysical studies by using the active learning methods.
2. Making a literature search and review on the recent (~ the last 10 years) published studies (SCI) about the Earth’s crust and the uppermost mantle beneath Turkey and surroundings.
Course Description
Evolution of the oceanic and continental crust and uppermost mantle.
Physical properties and structure of oceanic and continental crust and upper mantle.
Petrologic properties of the oceanic and continental crust and upper mantle rocks.
Classification of the oceanic and continental crustal structures based on their physical and structural characteristics.
Examples for tectonic structures of the oceanic and continental crust and Mohorovicic discontinuity.
Course Outcomes
M.Sc./Ph.D. students who successfully pass this course gain knowledge, skill and competency in the following subjects;
I. Developing and intensifying knowledge about the physics and structure of the Earth’s crust and uppermost mantle based upon the competency in the undergraduate level and understanding of importance of inter-disciplinary interaction related to these subjects (~ JFM-MSc-Program Outcome-1-KNOWLEDGE)
II. The ability to review the advanced knowledge and skills in the physics and structure of the Earth’s crust and uppermost mantle and direct one’s own learning process (~JFM-MSc- Program Outcome-3- COMPETENCY TO WORK INDEPENDENTLY, TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND DIRECT ONE’S OWN LEARNING PROCESS).
III. The ability to transfer knowledge about new developments on the physics and structure of the Earth’s crust and uppermost mantle to other groups in and out of the area ; in written, oral and visual forms using
a foreign language –at least European Language Portfolio B2 Level- (~ JFM-MSc- Program Outcome-4-COMMUNICATION AND SOCIAL COMPETENCY).
IV. Developing advanced skills in using information and communication technologies in and out class assignments effectively (~ JFM-MSc- Program Outcome-6-COMMUNICATION AND SOCIAL COMPETENCY).
V. The ability to propose future researches about the physics and structure of the Earth’s crust and
the uppermost mantle beneath Turkey and surroundings and improve advanced skills in using the scientific and ethical values in oral and written presentations and teach these values to others (~ JFM-MSc- Program Outcome-7-AREA SPECIFIC COMPETENCY).
