Course Objectives i) “One Dimensional Modeling“: Theoretical explanation of one dimensional governing equations describing performance, fuel economy and emissions of ICE and the one dimensional dynamics of vehicles. Analysis of engine and vehicles systems using commercial codes. ii) “Computational Fluid Dynamics”: Introduction to the theory and applications of computational fluid dynamics in automotive engineering. Techniques for applying commercial codes to engineering problems. iii) "Multibody Simulation”: An introduction to theory of multibody system dynamics simulation, an overview of available commercial software, a sound understanding of tire, suspension and full-vehicle modeling, post processing and validation of results through real testing iv) “Finite Element Analysis”: Introduction to Finite Element Stiffness Method in structural analysis, mathematical models of structures, element discretization, applications of FE Matrix Model, forces, displacements and sign convention, stiffness method, formulation procedures for element structural relationships, global stiffness matrices, commercial vehicle applications using FEM, applying forces, loads, boundary conditions, mesh generation and post processing.
Course Description i) "One Dimensional Modeling" : Modeling of performance, fuel consumption and emissions of ICE and the vehicles powered by ICE’s. Performance, fuel consumption and emissions criterions. Simulation of vehicles of possible combinations, including hybrid/electric vehicles (AVL BOOST, CRUISE) ii) "Computational Fluid Dynamics" : Introduction to fluid dynamics applications related to automotive engineering. Governing equations, discretization techniques, boundary conditions, stability, and consistency. Case studies using FLUENT and STAR CCM+. iii) "Multibody Simulation" : Kinematics and dynamics of rigid bodies, multibody system simulation software's, modeling of suspension systems, tyre modeling, full-vehicle models, simulation output and interpretation, testing. Applications in IPG/CarMaker and MSC/ADAMS. iv) "Finite Element Analysis" : Theory of FEM, stiffness matrice method, formulation procedures for element structural relationships, applying forces, loads, and boundary conditions, creating meshes, post processing simulation for stress, strain, displacement, modal analysis, stiffness of vehicle bodies. Applications with ANSYS and MSC/FEA.
Course Outcomes 1) Provide advanced numerical simulation techniques and the corresponding theoretical background
2) Provide an understanding of engineering problems in general. Modeling, the governing equations, solution techniques, boundary and initial conditions, preprocessing.
3) Solution, post processing and visualization. Provide a vision to interpret the results. Comparing with real measurements, make model and parameter revisions.
