Course Objectives
1.To provide basic literature on ecology, urban design & ecological design
2. To discuss ecological basis of urbanization problems.
3. To introduce contemporary approaches and methods in urban ecological design
4.To provide information about urban ecology and its implication on urban design process
5.To discuss the design solutions based on environmental performance in urban space.
Course Description
Ecological basis of urbanization problems, basic concepts of ecology, urban design and urban ecology. principles of ecological design, urban ecosysem, ecological and social factors taht inform urban design. Urban hydrology, urban soil, urban micro-climate, biodiversity, urban flora, corridors, connectivity. Landscape ecological principles as a spatial theory (Patch-Corridor-Matrix Model). Flows in urban environment, artful rainwater management, the urban edge, ecological performance in urban environment, ecology and infrastructure, contemporary design praxix and ecology.
Course Outcomes
Graduate students who successfully pass this course gain the following knowledge, skills and proficiencies;
1.Learn ecological principles that informs urban design process
2.Learn basic concepts and approaches of urban ecological design
3.To know ecological basis of environmental problems related to urbanization.
4.Gain ability to develop critical thought and to discuss the projects based on environmental performance in urban design at the conceptual level.
5.To know ecological and social drivers that impact urban hydrology, microclimate, soil, corridors, connectivity and biodiversity.
6.Gain ability to develop critical thought on urban design projects through the lens of ecology.
7.To develop an awereness about the ecological implications of design solutions.
8.Gain ability to develop an ecological thinking to urban environment.
