Course Objectives
1. Defining methane related problems in underground mines and tunnels
2. Teaching the measuring and sampling methods for methane control
3. Teaching the methane control methods for different kind of mining methods
Course Description
Facts about methane. Importance of methane in accordance to mine safety. Sampling for methane in mines and tunnel. Methane control at development excavations. Preventing methane ignitions at longwall faces. Coal seam degasification. Managing excess gas emissions associated with coal mine geologic features. Forecasting gas emissions for coal mine safety applications. Control of methane during coal mine shaft excavation. Explosion hazards of coal dust in the presence of methane. Methane control in metal-nonmetal mines. Preventing methane gas explosions during tunnel construction.
Course Outcomes
1. To determine methane related problems in underground mines and tunnels
2. Forecasting or modelling of gas emissions into mine
3. To measure and sample for methane control applications
4. Applying different methane control applications for different mining conditions and methods
