Course Objectives 1.To provide basic literature on the paradigm of ecology and design
2.To introduce ecological design principles
3.To introduce the contemporary approaches in ecological landscape design
4.To discuss the design solutions based on environmental performance in urban space.
Course Description Basic concepts of human interactions that affect ecological systems. Basic concepts in landscape ecology that explains the interrelations between cultural and natural systems. Literature in ecological design. Definition of ecological design and historical perspective. Modernism, design and ecology. Contemporary approaches in ecological landscape design. Ecological performance in landscape design. Ecological design principles. Design solutions based on environmental performance in urban space.
Course Outcomes Graduate students who successfully pass this course gain the following knowledge, skills and proficiencies;
1. Learn basic concepts of human interactions that affect ecological systems
2. Learn the approaches and principles in ecological landscape design
3. Gain the ability to develop critical thought and to discuss the design solutions based on environmental performance proposed by landscape design projects
4. Learn to access sources of primary scientific literature on environmental effects of landscape interventions
