MYL 503E - Eurogenetic Music Theory

Course Objectives

1. Through readings, writing, analysis, and discussion, to develop an understanding of sonata form in students,
2. To familiarise students with the compositional styles of Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven, and how they are similar and different from each other,
3. To provide students to turn their intuitions and experiences of music into articulate statements about musical form, craft, and meaning,
4. Through readings on a variety of topics, to develop an understanding of the current field of music theory in students,

Course Description

A study of Western classical form with emphasis on sonata form, structures of theme types, such as sentence, period, and hybrid forms, slow introduction, exposition, development, recapitulation, and coda, slow movement forms, minuet and trio, rondo forms, formal analysis of selected works from the Romantic period and 20th century,
