MYE 507E - Foundation of Ethnomusicology

Course Objectives

1, Through readings and discussion, to deepen students’ knowledge of the history of ethnomusicology,
2, To explore the theoretical approaches ethnomusicologists have used in the past and are using today,
3, By familiarizing themselves with the literature of ethnomusicology, to help students develop a personal view of the mediation of their research, emphasizing written texts and the importance of audio and video supplements,

Course Description

Introduction to ethnomusicology, historical world views of early ethnomusicologists, transcription analysis, sound structure as social structure, ethnography, uses and functions of music, oral tradition, semiotics, relationship between music and society, concept of gender, historical and recent trends in ethnomusicology,
