MZJ 805 - MUSIC HISTORY

Course Objectives

This course aims to;
1. To consider music as a part of culture,
2. To get knowledge about the evolution of music and the relationship between
people and music,
3. To teach the culture phenomenon in music history, also social, mythological,
religious, and educational functions and development of music in the societies
since the ancient times in Mediterranean.
4. To study technical features history and culture of European music and Turkish
Makam music in the geographical region, this is from Central Asia to Balkans and Europe, by comparing with historical documents.

Course Description

The origin of music. Music and human-society and music relationship. Music cultures in ancient civilizations. Iconographic sources related with music and examination of instruments. Troubadours. Medieval Instruments. Medieval Theatre and function of music in medieval theatre. Examination of music theory studies on medieval music. Composers of Renaissance, analysis of their works. Examination of music theory studies, instruments and styles on Renaissance music. Composers of Baroque and Classic Era, analysis of their works. Examination of music theory studies, instruments and styles on Renaissance music, Composers of Romantic Era , analysis of their works. Examination of music theory studies, instruments and styles on Renaissance music. Modernism, impressionism and its composers: Debussy, M. Ravel. Shöenberg and twelve-tone music. Polyphonic Turkish Music and The Turkish Five and analysis of their works: Cemal Reşit Rey, Ulvi Cemal Erkin, Hasan Ferit Alnar, Ahmed Adnan Saygun, Necil Kazım Akses. Afer The Turkish Five, composers and analysis of their works: Arel, Usmanbaş, Tüzün, Mimaroğlu, Tura Music culture in Turkish-Islam Nations. Founder of “Sistemci Okul” Safiyüddin Urmevi and Abdülkadir Meragi. Social and cultural life of Ottomans in 15th - 16th – 17th century and their relationship with music.
