Course Objectives
1. To deepen one’s understanding of the theories of Heinrich Schenker
2. Provides practicum in Schenkerian graphing procedures and reductive voice-leading
analysis
3. Multi-leveled analyses applied to music of the common practice period give student
deeper knowledge of this repertoire
4. Addresses ways in which Schenker’s theories have been applied to non-tonal musics
Course Description
Schenkerian analysis in Music theory today. Source readings from Schenker’s Free Composition
and Essays on Sonata and Fugue. Problematization of the techniques discussed in relation to pre-
common practice and Twentieth-century repertoires. Extensive graphing procedures and reductive
voice-leading analysis applied to music of the common practice period.
