Course Objectives Through weekly lessons and assignments, to create a competency in counterpoint and harmony in the practice of composition,
2. To develop an understanding of musical process and forms, particularly those of contemporary music,
3. To teach how to realise and present their compositions in performance, if necessary making revisions under the guidance of the instructor
Course Description Beginning of advanced studies in composition, Development of technique and form in the writing of small chamber works, Development of writing for certain characteristics and unique qualities of instruments
Course Outcomes Graduate students who successfully pass this course gain the following knowledge, skills, and competencies:
1. Skill in developing an appropriate set of strategies for composition
2. Deeper knowledge of contemporary musical styles
3. Competency in developing a sense of stylistic self-awareness
4. Competency in commenting on a range of musical and aesthetic issues regarding creation, originality, intention, and emulation in contemporary music,
5. Skill in revising, arranging and presenting their own music
