Course Objectives 1. To develop in students an idiomatic sensibility of eighteenth-century contrapuntal styles,
2. To teach writing skills in an eighteenth-century contrapuntal idiom,
Course Description The acquisition of knowledge of the workings of the eighteenth-century contrapuntal discipline, and
the ability to write naturally in eighteenth-century contrapuntal idioms,
Course Outcomes Graduate students who successfully pass this course gain the following knowledge, skills, and
competency in composing using eighteenth-century contrapuntal techniques,
2. Knowledge about the rules governing eighteenth-century contrapuntal writing,and the
ability to articulate them
3. Knowledge about the compositional forms that were most prevalent in the eighteenthcentury as well as to know important works by eighteenth-century composers,
4. The ability to sense what is stylistically appropriate in an eighteenth-century contrapuntal
piece,
5. The ability to set text in an eighteenth-century style
