Course Objectives
1. Through weekly lesson and assignments, to create a competency in the necessary contrapuntal and harmonic necessary for composition,
2. To develop an understanding of musical process and forms, particularly those of contemporary music,
3. To teach how to realise and present their compositions in performance, if necessary making revisions under the guidance of the instructor,
Course Description
Introductory course for Master’s level composers, covering compositional skills such as rhythmic and intervallic developmental techniques, middleground formal control, approaches to creativity and the compositional process, advanced notational proficiency, and career skills for the composer
Course Outcomes
Graduate students who successfully pass this course gain the following knowledge, skills, and competencies:
1. Skill in developing an appropriate set of strategies for composition
2. Deeper knowledge of contemporary musical styles
3. Competency in developing a sense of stylistic self-awareness
4. Skill in arranging and presenting their own music
5. Ability to deliver professional quality scores and parts in keeping with contemporary performance and notation conventions,
