Course Objectives This course aims to;
1. To give knowledge about makam(mode) and usul (rhytmic cycle) in Turkish music
theory historically.
2. To give the ability of analyzing makam and usuls.
3. To give knowledge about the history of Turkish music theory based on analysis of
makam and usul.
Course Description Formation,progression and structural constitution of makam and usul, relationship between
makam and usul in the musis theory books from 9th to 13rd century. Makam and usul in the 13rd
century: Safiyyüddin Urmevi. Makam and usul in the 14-15th century: Abdülkâdir Meragi.
Makam and usul in the Arabic and Persian sources in 14-15th centuries: Kırşehri, Ladikî ve
Tirevi. Makam and usul in 16-17th centuries: Ali Ufki. Makam and usul in the first half of 18th
century: Kantemiroğlu. Makam and usul in the second half of 18th century: Hızır Ağa ve
Abdülbakî Nasır Dede. Makam and usul in the 19th century: Haşim Bey. Makam and usul in the
20th century: Rauf Yekta Bey, Arel- Ezgi- Uzdilek, Abdülkadir Töre - Ekrem Karadeniz
Course Outcomes Graduate students who successfully pass this course gain the following knowledge skills and
competencies
1. Knowledge about the historical formation and progression of makam and usul
2. Ability to analyze and evaluate the makam and usul in the historical process.
3. Ability to rethink the Turkish music history
4. Ability to reinforce the practices of makam and usul
