Course Objectives • Analyze popular music studies within ethnomusicology theories periodically.
• To possess a critical approach on contemporary musics through popular music theories and deepen the knowledge of the music, consumed and/or produced.
• To understand and apply theoretical approaches on popular music writings
• To interpret popular music from the perspective of cultural theories.
Course Description Analyzing popular music studies that progress as a recent area in musicology. Improving an interdisciplinary critical approach through some theories such as popular culture, identity, history, industry, globalization, gender etc. Music industry and technology. Music video studies. Semiotics in popular music. Aesthetics of popular music.
Course Outcomes Graduate students who successfully pass this course gain the following knowledge, skills and competencies;
I. Knowledge of critical and analytical approaches on popular music studies
II. Competency on interpreting recent debates in popular music within the framework of academic-scientific literature.
III. Skill and competency on presenting individual works in popular music studies.
IV. Competency on improving an interdisciplinary critical approach through musicology and popular music theories.
