Course Objectives
• To consider music as a part of culture,
• To evaluate the social and cultural life and importance of music in the Selim III Era.
• To analyze the edvars explained the music theory and composers which lived in this period and their works in the Selim III when Turkish Makam Music characteristics had been formed.
• To teach the culture phenomenon in Selim III Era music history, also social, mythological, religious, and educational functions and development of music in the societies.
Course Description
The evaluation of social and cultural life in 18th century. Selim III Era and examination of the reasons of this era. Reform movement. Effects of westernization and modernization movement to Ottoman cultural, social and music life. Echole of Selim III. Composers of era and their works. Tradition of collective fasıl “ortak fasıl”. Studies of music theory. Abdülbaki Nasır Dede, Tehkik ü Tahkik and Tahririye. Hamparsum Limoncuyan and his music notation system. Mevlevi tradition on Selim III Era.
