Course Objectives
1. To familiarise with current relevant topics in the field of music theory..
2. To generate a working knowledge of post-tonal, neo-Riemmanian, and Schenkerian
theories.
3. To investigate theories of rhythm and analytical techniques for analyzing sound (i.e. non-
pitch-based analysis techniques).
Course Description
New trends in 20th-century music and analysis. Current analytical techniques (review of recent
theory journals). Schenkerian analysis. Post-tonal theory. Neo-Riemannian Theory. New
approaches to rhythm and sound analysis.
