Course Objectives
1. To improve students’ group interaction skills through composing, performing, and discussing improvised works
2. To help students to develop an understanding of cognitive processes of improvised music-making through their own experiences in performing and producing a concert,
3. To give students a broad perspective on the uses of improvisation in music through focused listening to selected recordings, placed in context by weekly readings,

Course Outcomes
Graduate students who successfully pass this course gain the following knowledge, skills, and competencies:
1. Skill in planning, performing, and discussing improvised music
2. Competency in compositional skills
3. Skill in creating and using extended performance techniques and concepts
4. Skill in increasing perceptual, analytical, and critical abilities by discussing each
improvisation performed by the class
5. Skill in deepening their critical listening abilities, through extensive contextualized
listening of selected recordings from a variety of traditions
