STR 502E - Philosophy of Art & Aesthetics

Course Objectives

Throughout the course we will examine questions such as “what is art?” and what is beauty?” as well as examining the nature of aesthetic experience, with a focus on changes in our approaches to art from an emphasis on the mimetic and the universal to an emphasis on the original and the subjective.

Course Description

This course examines many key figures and ideas in the history of the philosophy of art, from Classical Greece, Medieval philosophy, the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, and contemporary approaches to and theories of art.
