BVT 505E - Scie.&Techn.in Islamic World

Course Objectives

This course is both an introduction to “Science and Technology in the Muslim World” and a more in-depth account of some of the philosophical issues surrounding this subject. While developments specific to the History of Science in the Islamic World will be emphasized, it will become clear that the Greeks had a pervasive influence on mainstream Muslim thinkers and theologians, just as later the Arabs were vital for the development of the sciences in the Latin West.

Course Description

A wide range of topics will be discussed, including the History of Medicine, Physics, Pharmacology, Optics, Geography, Logic and Philosophy, Cartography, Chemistry, Mineralogy, Travel Writing, Geoponics, Astronomy and Astrology, Physiology, and the Influence on the Latin West.
