Course Objectives 1. Through readings and discussion, to develop awareness of the main trends and developments in periodisation and cultural context of particular repertoires and stylistic categories within Western music,
2. Develop an understanding of how musical styles develop and are categorised,
3. To familiarise students with current ideas on canon formation,
4. Through focused listening to selected examples to provide students with critical listening skills and an understanding of the representative genres and stylistic features present in Western music,
Course Description Provides focused study of repertoires as de-limited by criteria other than those of the single composer or genre: by, for instance, combinations of medium, compositional 'school,' culture, patronage, nationality and period
Course Outcomes Graduate students who successfully pass this course gain the following knowledge, skills, and competencies:
1. Knowledge of the historical background, and the cultural and intellectual settings, of representative composers’ works
2. Competency in commenting on a range of music-historical issues such as repertoire and canon formation,
3. Skill in describing, evaluating and/or challenging current scholarly thinking
4. Competency in researching and presenting essays in a standard musicological format,
5. Competency in utilising the standard bibliographical tools and resources used in the study of music history
6. Competency in categorising and contextualising musical examples based on listening experiences
