Course Objectives I. To have a theoretical background on the structural analysis of music,
II. To apply different analysis approaches to the field of Popular Music,
III. To analyze works in terms of composition, lyrics, arrangement and production,
IV. To be aware of recent studies in this field,
V. To establish a musico-analytic basis for further studies in the sociological and cultural context of Popular Music.
Course Description Examining the musical elements (melody, harmony, rhythm, texture, arrangement, lyrics, performance and production) that make up popular music, both independently and holistically, with different structural approaches, and revealing the style and stylistic features.
Course Outcomes Graduate students who successfully pass this course gain the following knowledge skills and competencies;
I. Theoretical and practical information about Musical Analysis,
II. Developing techniques of structural analysis in Popular Music,
III. Evaluating the structural elements that determine the style, the “sound” and the authentic musical expression within the framework of musico-analytical criteria,
IV. The ability to interpret the examined literature studies and the ability to create new theoretical/analytical models.
