Course Objectives
• Establishing a theoretical understanding of Set-Theory
• Be able to analyze musical structures beyond traditional tonality
• Learn about the structural foundations of post-tonal music through analizing works of composers from 20th century
• Building a fundamental framework for further studies on post-tonal music analysis.
Course Description
An introduction to Set Theory and analytical approaches to post-tonal music. Pitch-Organizations beyond tonality. Fundamentals of Set theory; pitch-class sets, properties, relationships and basic operations, centricity and pitch collections, free atonality, serialism, twelve-tone theory and neotonality. Aspects other than pitch including rhythm and meter, texture, musical form and temporal organizations Examples from 20th century repertoire – including pieces from Schoenberg, Berg, Webern, Stravinsky, Bartok, Babbitt, Carter, Berio, Bartok, Seeger and Saariaho - and weekly analyses.
