Course Objectives 1. To analyse Turkish music characteristics through the Mecmua-i Saz ü Söz in which applications for Turkish music in the 17th century take part.
2. To analyse by having information on the music notation of the period.
3. To have information on forms, composers, usuls, makams of the period.
Course Description Overview on the history and music of Ottoman Empire in the 16th and 17th century. Narratives of European travelers, evaluations about the period in the travelbook of Evliya Çelebi. The life and the masterpieces of Ali Ufki Bey. Life in Topkapı Palace. Analyzing and evaluating the notation systems in Mecmua-i Saz u Söz. Analyses and evaluations on the pieces. Musical forms and analysis on repertoire. Makam analysis on repertoire. Metric analysis on repertoire. Comparative analysis of lyrics in the songbook of Hafız Post and Mecmua-ı Saz u söz.

III. Skill on performing the repertoire in Mecmua-i Saz ü Söz regarding the characteristics of the period.
