Course Objectives
1. To instill in students the habit of conducting chemistry experiments under safe conditions.
2. To reinforce chemical knowledge through experiments.
3. To practice basic experimental techniques and the use of certain instruments.
4. To enable students to write scientific reports.
5. To help students understand the connection between chemicals and daily life.
Course Description
Laboratory safety rules, basic chemical concepts, Matter: Properties and measurement, Atoms and atomic theory, Electronic structure of the atom, Periodic table and atomic properties, Chemical compounds, Chemical reactions, Introduction to aqueous solution reactions, Gases, Thermochemistry, Chemical bonds (basic concepts and bonding theories), Intermolecular forces: Liquids and solids, Solutions and their physical properties, Chemical equilibrium and its principles, Acids and bases, Spontaneous change: Entropy and Gibbs energy.
Course Outcomes
1. They can prepare the setups used in the experiment.
2. They gain knowledge about laboratory rules and safety.
3. They gain knowledge about chemical equilibrium, acid-base chemistry, and solubility.
4. They can synthesize soap as a simple organic compound.
5. They learn how to perform a titration.
6. They learn about covalent bonds and molecular shapes.
7. They learn about thermochemistry and its principles.
