JEO 204E - Magmatik Kayalar petrografisi
Dersin Amaçları
Igneous (magmatic) rocks comprise almost the whole of the Earth's crust and mantle, while metamorphic rocks make up most of the continental crust. In addition, metasomatism is an important process in the evolution of the lithospheric mantle. Hence, magmatic and metamorphic rocks are of great importance to earth scientists. The aim of this course is to teach second-year students the classification, occurrence, composition, origin, and evolution of rocks formed from magmatic processes from mantle depths to the Earth’s surface. The course specifically focuses on describing and classifying magmatic rocks and their origin and distribution in the mantle, lithosphere, and Earth’s surface.
Dersin Tanımı
For earth scientists and specifically for Geological Engineers, a basic knowledge of petrography of the magmatic (igneous) rocks is of crucial importance because it can provide them with vital information about nomenclature and classification of various magmatic rocks, basic terminology, and several other important issues e.g., understanding the origin of minerals and rocks, tectonic setting in which they occur and their geological evolution.
