Course Objectives 1. To set out the geological structure and evolution of Turkey.
2. To explain the architecture of a long-standing orogenic belt and its evolution.
Course Description Pontides: İstanbul Zone, Strandja Massif, Sakarya Zone. Thrace Basin, Çankırı Basin. Anatolide-Taurides: Tavşanlı Zone, Afyon Zone, Menderes Massif, Bornova Flysch Zone, Taurides. Southeast Anatolia – Arabian Platform. Extensional tectonics: Aegean Sea, grabens and Kazdağ. Oligocene strike-slip tectonics: Uludağ. Seas: Marmara, Aegean, Black Sea and Eastern Mediterranean. Neotectonics of Turkey. Extensional tectonics in the World: Basin and Range province (USA), East African rift system. Contractional tectonics in the World: Himalaya, California. Strike-slip tectonics: San Andreas Fault System.
Course Outcomes M.Sc. students who take this course gain knowledge, skills and proficiency in the following subjects:
1. Structure, stratigraphy, geology of the tectonic units of Turkey.
2. Tectonic evolution of Turkey.
3. Understanding of the tectonic events, such as subduction, rifting, extension, contraction, and their reflection in the rock record.
4. Comparative tectonic architecture in the World and in Turkey.
