Course Objectives The main objectives of the course are;
1. to develop skills of implementing wastewater and sludge treatment principles in engineering practices through understanding the stoichiometry and kinetics of microbial growth,
2. to develop skills for the conceptual design of biological wastewater and sludge treatment processes
Course Description This course provides the fundamentals of metabolic processes in biological treatment and the principles of aerobic and anaerobic biological wastewater and sludge treatment processes in Environmental Engineering applications. The design principles of widely applied activated sludge systems for carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus removal from wastewaters are provided.
Course Outcomes The successful student will be able;
I. to use the concepts of stoichiometry and kinetics of microbial processes in biological wastewater treatment applications,
II. to design carbon removing activated sludge systems,
III. to design nitrogen removing activated sludge systems,
IV. to understand and asses the fundamentals and processes of enhanced biological phosphorus removing activated sludge systems,
V. to determine the general aspects of anaerobic wastewater treatment and to design related processes,
to determine the general aspects of aerobic and anaerobic sludge stabilization systems and to design related processes
