JDF 411E - Fundamentals of Geographical Information Systems

Course Objectives

Geographic Information Systems & Science (GIS) are an integrative set of concepts and technologies, including data capture (scanning, digitizing, GPS), data analysis, and output (mapping) of spatial information. This course consists of an overview of the concepts, functions, and use of GIS software and hardware combined with a service-learning, community, regional project that engages the students in an actual GIS application.

Course Description

The course incorporates rapidly developing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) theory and applications. This course, being the first within the GIS package, fundamentals of GIS, methods, data modeling, analyses, visualization and project management themes are covered. In addition to these fundamental concepts, problems and alternative solutions for spatial data handling, conceptual data modeling, spatial data analyses and GIS project management consistent with national and international standards is covered.
