Course Objectives
Geographic Information Systems & Science (GIS) are an integrative set of concepts and technologies, including data capture (scanning, digitizing, GPS), data analysis, and output (mapping) of spatial information. This course consists of an overview of the concepts, functions, and use of GIS software and hardware combined with a service-learning, community, regional project that engages the students in an actual GIS application.
Course Description
The course incorporates rapidly developing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) theory and applications. This course, being the first within the GIS package, fundamentals of GIS, methods, data modeling, analyses, visualization and project management themes are covered. In addition to these fundamental concepts, problems and alternative solutions for spatial data handling, conceptual data modeling, spatial data analyses and GIS project management consistent with national and international standards is covered.
Course Outcomes
Students who complete this course successfully
1) Explains the concepts of GIS, spatial data and spatial database.
2) Elaborates on vector and raster data structure and differentiate data structure usage within application.
3) Identifies and selects the adequate acquisition and processing methodology for spatial data production of Geomatics Engineering applications.
4) Designs and implements the spatial conceptual data model and the GIS considering the Geomatics Engineering and other disciplines requirements.
5) Organizes and integrates data that are compatible with national and international standards.
6) Understands the spatial query and analyses and applies them to the relevant study field.
7) Reports the results of GIS analyses according to the application requirements.
Pre-requisite(s)
*** For final exam sit, term homework should be submitted.

HOMEWORK: CONCEPTUAL DATA MODEL DESIGN AND SPATIAL QUERIES AND ANALYSES: After the 7th. week, students are expected to design a conceptaul data model on a specific subject. The relationships are prepared and spatial queries are preformed in an GIS environment. The achieved results should be presented.
• The efforts is going to be delivered in a project form.
• The homework is going to be a team work.
• This homework is the prerequisite for sitting the final exam.
