Course Objectives 1.Learning the basic knowladge and concepts in rock mechanics
2.Understanding stress-strain processes taking place in earth crust.
3.Environmental conditions of rock affecting the physical and mechanical properties
4.Failure mechanism and the importance of time dependent behaviour for stability in geotechnical apllications.
Course Description The course outlines the theory of failure in rock materials and the parameters affecting the behavior of rock materials. It presents the index and mechanical properties of rock materials, gives different examples of geo technical application on rock and describes method of application to solve the problems in rock engineering.
Course Outcomes Students who pass the course will be able to:
I. Role and importance of rock Mechanics in earth sciences, relationship with other sciences, the methods of evolution for fractured rock mass strength .
II. Characterization and mechanical behavior of different earth material, strength of rocks, stress and strain concepts.
III. Rock structures and the origin of stress in the earth crust.
IV. Mohr stress circles and Mohr-Coulomb failure envelope.
V. Rock failure parameters affecting on the behavior of rock.
VI. Time dependent behavior of rock.
VII. Stabilization methods for excavation in rock and bearing capacity of rack mass.
VIII. Laboratory and field (in-situ) tests in Rock Mechanics.
