MOD 125 - Fashion Research & Inspiration

Course Objectives

Discover and understand new ways to reference and represent ideas by examining the cultural past, and applying them to their own contemporary designs.
Acquire a stronger understanding of what caused styles to change over times past and how to better interpret and forecast what may serve as a catalyst for changes in the near and distant future.
Learn how to apply fashion history as a powerful tool to create fashions for current markets.
Develop superior research skills utilizing library, digital, and museum sources.
Broaden their fashion vocabulary to better understand the terminology and
concepts from the past that are still utilized in today’s industry.

Course Description

Lectures sequentially cover prehistoric and ancient eras to the Industrial Revolution and the start of the 20th Century. Menswear and womenswear silhouettes, textile development, construction innovation, garment details, accessories and the arts and culture of each period will be studied. Historic inspiration as utilized by contemporary designers will be identified and analyzed.
