Course Objectives
By examining the patterns of a garment, determining the sewing plan and the sequence of construction steps.
Being able to identify and apply fabric, sewing, and pattern characteristics appropriate to the design.
Developing sewing techniques by carrying out applications with lightweight and transparent fabrics.
Understanding and applying design and sewing characteristics, especially for fine and draped fabrics.
Selecting and using sewing, pattern, and finishing techniques suitable for different types of fabrics.
Course Description
As it relates to the fashion designer, the course advances students' knowledge of materials, core properties, and construction techniques that inform silhouette design and hands-on prototype development.
Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: Adapt knowledge and expand upon learning acquired when selecting and using appropriate fabrications for the development and realization of desired garment silhouettes, specific details and functionality.
Creatively select silk, sheer, and pile fabrics with the desired weight, hand, and care features needed to develop 3-dimensional design solutions.
Independently determine efficient pattern layout and analysis of selected fabrications that integrate appropriate related industry techniques for the cutting and preparation of design materials.
Apply and incorporate advanced construction techniques in the generation of well-made details in the creation of prototype garments.
Choose and use appropriate construction techniques and finishing details for a variety of fabrications and style details, especially silks, sheers, piles, and wools.
Evaluate which industrial machinery, stitching details, pressing, and finishing techniques will yield the desired results most efficiently.
Apply the methods and techniques learned to initiate and successfully carry out creative projects.
