Course Objectives 1, To survey a sample of orchestral literature to gain a sense of how the orchestra has changed over time and to learn how the orchestra has been written for
2, To study both traditional orchestration techniques as well as current extended practices
3, To gain experience by writing for instruments and hearing the results
Course Description Weekly study of a different orchestral score, writing of three composition assignments which will be read by live, focusing on a different instrumentation (i,e, string quartet, woodwind quintet, etc,) , focusing writing on specific instrumental combinations, history of composition, Analysing of some famous composer’s works,
Course Outcomes Graduate students who successfully pass this course gain the following knowledge, skills and competencies
1. Knowledge of how composers (i,e, Beethoven, Wagner, Mahler, Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Webern, Bartok, Adams, etc,) from the past and present have written for orchestra,
2. Knowledge about current and extended playing techniques through the study of recent music by composers such as Luciano Berio and Helmut Lachenmann,
3. Skill in hands-on orchestration experience through custom-designed projects which will be read by live musicians,
4. Competency in receive feedback from performers as to how idiomatic and playable their own music is,
