Course Objectives 1. Through technical exercises and etudes, to improve students’ technique and musicality,
2. To develop an understanding of musical performance through a study of repertoire from
different periods,
3. To acquaint students with various composers and musical styles,
Course Description Musical and form analysis of works selected from the Romantic and early 20th century repertoire,
musical and form analysis of works selected from the late 20th century repertoire, technique class,
analysis of stylistic issues related to performance, comparing various artists’s interpretations,
writing program notes for the end-of-semester recital,
Course Outcomes On successful completion of this course students will gain the following knowledge, skills and
competencies:
1. Competency in demonstrating higher level of competence on their chosen instrument
2. Skill in identifing problems in their own technique and coming up with solutions to
correct them
3. Knowledge of discourse on a range of musical and aesthetic issues related to their
chosen instrument such as influential performers, composers and compositions,
originality, and historical performance practice,
4. Competency in presenting a well prepared performance on their chosen instrument in
an end-of-semester jury
