Course Objectives

1. To examine Aşık Art, which supports musical culture of Turkey as a living tradition.
2. To investigate and preserve both national and global traditional heritage.

Course Description

The concept of Aşık. The basic principals of Aşık Art. Master-apprentice relations. Repertory. Instruments. Works of masters. Literal and musical genres, forms, and types. Folk artists as narrators/story tellers. The traces of aşık art in some particular historical written sources. Aşık art in 20th and 21st Century. Aşık music compilations from fieldworks. Aşık characters in Turkic World. Aşık schools. Aşık-s as a popular artist type. Bibliography of Aşık Art of Turkic Countries.
