Course Objectives
1, To introduce the rules of tonal grammar and to develop the ability analyze passages of tonal music,
2, To develop writing skills in a tonal idiom, gaining experience in four-part writing, modulation, etc,
Course Description
Review of fundamental materials (keys, scales, intervals, triads and seventh chords, cadences); examination of the various diatonic chords and their harmonic functions in different contexts (including four-part writing, non-chord tones and diatonic sequences); review of common procedures of chromatic harmony (i,e, tonicization, modulation, mode mixture, the Neapolitan chord and augmented- sixth chords).
